MULLEN- Joseph and Margaret, 5720 Glengate boy, September A very new and different kind of rumor is circulating in Cincinnati radio circles. The rumor has to do with WKRC's recent purchase of an airplane. It seems, according to the rumor, that Hulbert Taft Managing Director, and Warde Butler, an Announcer, are the only pilots at the station, the executives are rather worried.

They think that with only two pilots they will not be able to use the airplane to its full advantage. So, still according to the story I've heard, the executives have decided not to hire any new employees unless they have pilot's licenses! Taft is going to Wichita, today to get the airplane, a Beech Bonanza. Ho. will fly it back to Cincinnati tomorrow and then on to the National Association of Broadcasters convention in Atlantie City, N. Monday, I understand that Taft has asked other executives at the station if they would like to' ride to the convention with him.

As yet, no one has accepted the invitation. Niles Trammell, President of the National Broadcasting will present a plaque tonight, to James D. Shouse, President of the CrosBroadcasting in recognition of WL.W 20 years of affiliation with the network. Since the end of the war the number of broadcasting stations has soared to heights that would have been incredible in 1939.

Several months ago this column pointed out that the skyrocketing total could have either of two a proportional increase in listening, or A further division of the existing audience. The evidence is beginning to come in now. The trade journal, Broadcasting, prints this revealing story: "The increase in the number of stations has failed to bring about a corresponding increase in listening, a special analysis prepared for Broadcasting by C. E. Hooper, revealed, "The analysis was based on studies in 17 cities where a total of 26 new stations have taken to the air Although the number of stations has increased by 31.7 per cent.

sets in use have risen only 8.5 per cent The 8.5 per cent increase in listening may have been traceable to the increase in the number of available homes and not to the increase in stations." That report may be inconclusive. But what it indicates makes obvious sense to any dialer. If the vast crop of new stations is to bring an increase in listening, programs must appeal more specialized audiences. In most communities, the audience for general appeal programs already is being served to the limit. Angling for that saturated market can mean only suicidal competition.

How far program specialization can be carried profitably remains to be seen. But the broadcasters soon may have to find out. or face the alternative of profitless competition. 9 p.m.: Meet the Press interviews James F. O'Neill, National Commander of the American Legion.
