Let Mommy date a girl only a couple of years older than you and this could be your life every couple of weeks.". It was psychological thriller quiet around the table as the three ate their Okinawan goat meat. Then, Asa put down her chopsticks...

"So...can you two...stop whatever this is?" She politely requested. "As far as pranks go, this is pretty good in an absurdist fashion but...come on. To keep it up for this long is a bit too much..."

"Can you not talk to me like you know who I am?" Asa coldly glared at Kobeni, causing the latter to flinch. "Even for a joke, that's pretty offensive."

"Asa, please." Kouki tried to calm her.

"You expect me believe that one day, my mom's just gay out of nowhere and she's dating a girl who looks younger than I do?" Asa glowered ahead, looking at nothing in particular. "This is...that's stupid. I don't know why you're messing with me like this but...I barely remember Dad but I know he deserves better than you mocking him like this. Am I supposed to call her Miss Higashiyama? Kobeni-chan? Mom? Do you hate me that much that you have to humiliate me like this?!"

"That's enough!" Kouki raised her voice before she could stop herself. Asa glared at her, her eyes welling up as she stood from the table.

"Thank you for the meal." Asa put her napkin over her plate. "If you'll excuse me---"

"Mitaka." Kobeni looked over at her. "I...it's not my place but can I say something?"

"...It's not like it'll make anything worse than it already is so you can go ahead." Asa stood at her seat as she scowled at Kobeni, Kouki hiding her face in her hand.

"I think it's..admirable that you care so much about the legacy of your father to be affronted by your mother taking another lover in a kind of...audacious manner. But, it's not her fault...as Kouki would tell you, I was the one who pursued her first. To an annoying extent, really...I didn't believe she would turn my way but here we are and...it's a huge step for her to introduce us to each other. She didn't have to do that..."

"I see. Is that it?" Asa curtly asked.

"Kouki talks about you all the time. She talks about how smart you are, how much you care for your cat, how difficult it is for others to understand you..." Kobeni gulped. "It makes me sound like a baby...not that I need any help in that area...but I was so jealous hearing her talk about you. Not because of how much she cared for you because that's to be expected but...my parents, they didn't care about me a single fraction of the way your mother cares for you. They made get a stupid job...that almost got me killed...just to pay for my brother's education. When I was forced on the run after the Chainsaw Man attack at Family Burger, I wasn't scared of dying. I was relieved...because if I disappeared, I'd never have to see them again."

Asa, a bit shaken, sat down in her seat.

"This is...this whole thing is bizarre, even by this city's standards. I know..." Kobeni gave Asa a small smile, causing the latter to flinch. "But...I would be grateful if you gave this, and me, a chance. And I would like to get to know you better. If not as family then...as a person."

Asa, more than a little embarrassed, took a breath and exhaled through her nose. She then picked up her glass of co*ke and Drops to sip from it before speaking.

"You worked...at Family Burger?" Asa quietly asked. "Didn't the singing get annoying?"

"It was more annoying that I couldn't hit the notes!" Kobeni chuckled.

Asa smiled back as Kouki looked on, a relieved one on her own face.

Over the next month, Asa and Kobeni did end up spending more time together, growing closer. Asa would use Kobeni as a sounding board for her intensive marine facts and Kobeni would listen. She would teach Kobeni to write in Dodoitsu, something the latter always wanted to learn. Kobeni herself would keep Asa active, going on runs with her and even teaching her somersaulting in the backyard. Kouki was overjoyed that her girlfriend and her daughter were getting along so quickly...even if Kobeni's haplessness and Asa's clumsy nature meant something new was broken every week. In fact, the house was set to receive a new entertainment center on the day there was a knock on the door while Kobeni and Kouki had their day off. Asa being out to help her teacher Tanaka at school with something, Kobeni got up to answer. Smiling, she prepared to greet the deliveryman.

"Thanks for getting here so ear---" She froze when she focused on the woman towering over her. Cream-colored hair tied back in a ponytail, a frilly eyepatch to match her collar, an icy stare looking down at her...she was in a Public Safety uniform. But she could have killed the person wearing it before to steal it for all she knew. It's not out of character from what she heard in the report...either way, she knew who was in front of her: Quanxi, the First Devil Hunter. The one who made a fool of Kishibe, Yoshida and some other guy in combat. The one who tried to cut Denji's heart out. The one who was in Hell with her...and fought the Darkness Devil. The only person this woman seemed to fear was Makima...and Makima's dead. She's here to finish off everybody who was allied with her! It doesn't matter that Makima tried to kill her; she's a private Devil Hunter! They're all psychos! Look at Yoshida! She slammed the door shut in her face and dashed off to the living room, frantically waving her arms around as she shouted gibberish.

"Kobeni! Kobeni." Kouki cupped her face as she soothingly spoke. "Calm down. Use your words. What happened?"

"WE HAVE TO GO!" Kobeni screamed. "No...you have to go! Go out through the back and leave! Go to Asa's school and run away with her! Don't let her catch you!"

"Who?! Kobeni, you're scaring me!" Kouki found her own heart rate pounding. "Who is out there?!"

"I'm not chasing either of you." Quanxi spoke up as she stood in front of them in the room, having apparently teleported in while they were talking.

Kobeni took in a massive breath to scream her lungs out, only to be stopped as Kouki stepped in front of her, glaring.

"Whoever you are, you're not touching her." Kouki furrowed her brow. "So just leave."

"She left the door unlocked so I thought she just wanted me to wait a bit before I came in." Quanxi snarked. "Otherwise, I would have just picked the lock."

Kobeni began hitting her forehead hard with the palm of her hand. "Stupid, stupid, stupid! I shouldn't have rushed!"

"Who even are you?" Kouki demanded. "Why are you here?"

"She's Quanxi, the First Devil Hunter." Kobeni trembled as she lightly pushed Kouki behind her, shielding her with her body. "She's a private Devil Hunter so...maybe she's here because she thinks we're Devils? Or she wants to feed us to her Fiends..."

"My girls are dead." Quanxi brusquely clarified, narrowing her eye. "I'm not here to kill anybody. You used to work for Public Safety, Miss Higashiyama...don't you recognize the uniform?"

"Wait...you're actually working for them?" Kobeni blinked. "You didn't steal the uniform?"

"That's the Immortal Brothers gimmick, not mine." Quanxi explained. "I went back to work for the Bureau for my own reasons. My current task is to keep an eye on Asa Mitaka...we think she's being targeted by a Horseman."

"Asa?!" Kouki gasped. "Why is she being targeted? What is going on?!"

"Sit down." Quanxi said. "This is going to take a couple of minutes to explain..."

So, with Kobeni holding her hand, Kouki listened in growing horror at Quanxi's deadpan description of the details: a certain boy, whose identity they cannot give out, goes to Asa's school and happens to be Chainsaw Man. Another private Devil Hunter turned Public Safety agent, Yoshida, is tailing him to make sure he doesn't do anything stupid...but Asa is a special case. She has been singled out for being a loner at school by none other than the War Devil, who is most likely planning on using her to make Chainsaw Man into a weapon so that she can start another Great War. All confidential information that Quanxi is technically not supposed to be telling either of them...but it'll make her job easier if Kouki was in on the loop and Kobeni is a former Hunter herself so she figures they're in the clear.

"This is...this is too much to hear..." Kouki began to shake, only calmed by Kobeni placing her other hand on top of hers. She clutched the bottom one back. "What's going to happen to my daughter?"

"We're hoping to stop the War Devil from claiming her as a host. Yoshida's supposed to be taking care of that." Quanxi said. "If that does happen, well...then her protection is completely in my hands. Like I said it was."

"Ugh, this is so confusing...when is Asa supposed to be back?" Kobeni asked.

"It's still morning...school isn't out until three." Kouki stood up. "I'm picking her up."

"There's several Public Safety agents surrounding the building along with Yoshida, not mention Chainsaw Man being a student." Quanxi stood up to block her. "You'll gonna have to wait until she gets back. The area is actually being secretly monitored and they'll kill anyone who's not scheduled to be there."

"Then what am I supposed to do?!" Kouki shouted at Quanxi. "My daughter is being watched...so many people are trying to...I feel sick..."

"Can I go?" Kobeni stood up. "You said it yourself, I'm a former agent. Maybe they'll make an exception for me to go in and get her."

"Like I said, former." Quanxi restated. "You go there as a civilian, which you currently are...they will shoot you full of holes as a suspect."

"They can do all that but they can't rescue her?!" Kobeni snapped back, clenching her fists. "Public Safety hasn't changed..."

"Hm." Quanxi scanned the room. "Do you have anything to drink around here?"

"What...how is that going to help?!" Kouki frowned.

"It'll steady the nerves. IF you stew for hours, you'll just end up with a migraine." Quanxi advised.

Kouki and Kobeni shared a look before staring back at Quanxi.

"There's...sweet vermouth, scotch and dry vermouth under the cabinet." Kouki said. "All untouched."

"Perfect." Quanxi cracked her neck. "I know a co*cktail..."

"Huh? The Doll Devil? I barely remember that one..." Kobeni tipsily held onto Kouki as the latter sat on the couch, curling herself onto her older lover's lap. "I thought Denji was being hunted by Santa Claus...evil Santa Claus, scary..."

"Santa Claus was one of her dolls. She had several of them and she was the main one...also named Santa Claus." Quanxi swigged from her glass as she sat in a chair. "She's the one who sent us to Hell...and killed two of my girls. She's gone but I'm not satisfied. Shows how worthless revenge is..."

"So sad...if my Kouki was killed, I wouldn't stop until everyone was dead!" Kobeni pouted. "Everyone except Asa, of course."

"You're sweet...you actually remind me of one of them." Quanxi said as she looked over at her, causing Kobeni to shyly hide her face in the side of Kouki's neck. "She talks like she's one of yours, Miss Mitaka."

"Oh, she's not my daughter." Kouki explained, suppressing a hiccup. "She's a...a very close friend."

"Not what I meant. I could smell her on you." Quanxi blankly revealed. "It wasn't in the reports but I think I figured out why Kobeni is seen with you outside of work."

"Oh no...don't tell!" Kobeni whined. "If everybody finds out, Asa will be embarrassed..."

"I'm not telling anyone. I'm in the same boat, remember?" Quanxi placed her glass down, resting her cheek on her hand. "You know about my girls, right?"

"Oh yeah...you're gay too!" Kobeni pointed at her. "So you have to be nice to us!"

"...If that made any sense, Makima wouldn't have cut my head off." Quanxi sniped as she gave Kobeni a tired look.

"Don't be mean! Be nice, be nice!" Kobeni ordered.

"She's a lightweight. Why do you even have that much alcohol?" Quanxi asked Kouki. "Neither of you drink."

"My husband, when he was alive...he wasn't an alcoholic but...he loved the sauce." Kouki sighed heavily. "Those types of foreign drinks were his favorite. I keep them there to remind me of him...or if there was an emergency."

"Good call." Quanxi nodded. "So you're a widower."

"Looks who's talking." Kouki darkly jested back.

"I...I'm not!" Kobeni declared. "I had two of my crushes die in duty...one of them right in front of me...but, I'm lucky...I'm always lucky..."

She began to shake as she fought back her tears, Kouki lifting her up in a bridal carry.

"I'm taking her to bed." Kouki said. "She can't think clearly when she's like this so I don't want to you to see her when she's drunk on top of that."

"I'll come along." Quanxi stood up. "I gotta make sure you two don't make a break for it."

"What makes you think you can catch us if we tried to run?" Kouki smugly challenged, her face flushed.

"I have my methods of keeping you captive..." Quanxi intoned while watching them both.

"...Asa Mitaka." Quanxi greeted as the other two just stared. "How was school?"

"...Your mother has a harem?" Yoru asked Asa before the latter fainted at the door.
