Brighton & Hove Albion has confirmed that head coach Roberto de Zerbi will leave the club after tomorrow’s final Premier League match of the season against Manchester United at the American Express Stadium.
De Zerbi, who joined Brighton in September 2022, following the departure of Graham Potter to Chelsea, oversaw the club’s highest top flight finish in 2022/23 and led the club to the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League earlier this season.
Chairman, Tony Bloom, said, “Roberto has given us two excellent seasons of service in which he has led the club to new heights, not least our first ever European campaign which will live long in the memory of Albion fans.
“We have mutually agreed to end Roberto’s contract at a time that suits both parties allowing us the earliest opportunity to plan for next season, and Roberto plenty of time to consider his next move and his future.
“I am sure our fans will give Roberto and his staff a wonderful and fully deserved send off at the Amex before, during and after tomorrow’s match.
“In the meantime, I’d like to thank Roberto and his staff for all their hard work in the past two seasons. They all leave our club on good terms and with our very best wishes for the future.”
Roberto de Zerbi said, “I am very sad to be leaving Brighton, but I am very proud of what my players and staff have achieved with the support of everyone at the club and our amazing fans in the past two historical seasons.
“We have agreed to end my time at Brighton so that the club and I can continue to work in the way that suits each of us best, following our own ideas and visions, as well as our work and human values.
“I have really enjoyed an intense and challenging two years working in the Premier League, not least competing in four major competitions this season. Leaving now provides me with time to take a break before deciding on my future plans.”
Andrea Maldera, Ricard Segarra, Marcattilio Marcattilii, Vincenzo Teresa, Agostino Tibaudi, Marcello Quinto and Enrico Venturelli will also leave after tomorrow’s final Premier League match. Club coaches Andrew Crofts and Jack Stern will remain with Brighton & Hove Albion.
This is how fans reacted with the favourites to become new Brighton manager revealed as it’s confirmed that De Zerbio is to leave at end of the 2023/24 season…
@ryanadsett: WHAT?!
@albiongirl68: Never ever dull being a #bhafc fan gutted to see him go. I guess the club wanted it announced before our home game. Now for the manager lottery. Rosenior is a good shout
@joeythorpe96: Bloom has a plan in place for every manager that leaves way ahead of time. Fans need to trust the process. #bhafc
@exiledseagull: My theory FWIW… RDZ wants a team willing to challenge for top 4 which would require significant first team ready investment. That isn’t our strategy/ model and neither Bloom/ Barber or RDZ are willing to budge so the we have mutually agreed to part ways. #BHAFC
@LemmyG10: WTF… Well, off he goes, should we boo, or clap? 0 loyalty in the club, Bloom masterclass soon… 👀 Shocked, and Amazed. #BHAFC
@TogetherBHA: Letting RDZ leave for free seems an unbelievably poor decision for a club that doesn’t make poor decisions, I have to imagine we’ve got some kind of loophole to cash in right? Or are we so unwilling to spend this summer we’d rather lose money? Crazy development! #BHAFC
@mattyfatcat: Get Potter back !!! #bhafc
@robdeshelby: Fuck off Roberto you shit cunt. Overrated manager, grass isn’t always greener. Proven time and time again. CIAO. #BHAFC
@SeagullUpNorth: Not much of a surprise here. Slight shock. Feels like the end of an incredible era. Good times had, lessons learned (I hope). Onward and upward! #bhafc
@SamCharman: Always be a legend for me. Gave us nights we could only ever dream of. #bhafc
@BHA_Toby7: Potter left, bought de Zerbi in, got Europe and an fa cup semi final. Beat the biggest team in Netherlands and France and then de zerbis left. All happened since potter was last employed #BHAFC
@DTP_14: Gutted, but we move on! It’s nice that we will get a proper chance to say thank you and goodbye! Let’s sell it out and create a great atmosphere for him! #BHAFC
@dinesy1985: Gutted and not 100% sure what to make of it. Wouldn’t surprise me if De Zerbi has had a big offer from a bigger club and this is why he’s now leaving. #bhafc
@Philip_Flop_: Moral if the story – no one is bigger than the club and don’t try and play Bloom! #BHAFC
@HastingsAlbion: This is a reminder to everyone know is bigger than the club! RDZ has got about his station this season questioning Mr Bloom and the board ! I have 100% faith in them to have someone already lined up and we will move on like we always do! #BHAFC
@jac_bhafc: I guess we’ll find out in due course about where and why RDZ is off, does anyone think he has been sacked and Bloom got his replacement in after the post Rome comments? Feel so gutted, what a journey it’s been, will never forget what Roberto has done for us #bhafc
@MwepuMagic: Am i being delusional by thinking bloom wouldn’t act this Rashly without a plan in mind, Think he’s already got the next gaffer lined up? #BHAFC
@KerrenGarner: Wow. Had got to thinking he was staying. Sad to see him go. Sure Tony has a plan #BHAFC
@georgtayl: This says it all. Club care more about fucking profits than re investing and pushing with a manager that wants to. #bhafc
@joeythorpe96: I’m absolutely devastated but I’m not overly surprised. Taken me to heights as a Brighton fan I never thought I’d have. Thank you for everything, Roberto. We all love you and wish you the best of luck 💙 #bhafc
@minute_tweets: Call me crazy but I’m at total peace with De Zerbi leaving. It was obvious his heart wasn’t with Bloom’s vision and he wanted more. Fair enough. Thanks for the Europa league but I’m not even half as scared as what I was when Potter left us last season. #BHAFC
@sfcwxl:
Brighton are literally following in Southampton’s footsteps
1- Have a class manager who develops young players, selling then on for profit.
2- Works for a few years and you get europe.
3- form slips due to replacement youngsters being of the same ability
