Beauty DIY: 5 Natural Homemade Lip Balm Recipes (1)

The best part is that these lip balms are completely natural and you can control what ingredients you use, what flavor you get and how much you make so you will never run out. Take a look at these recipes for making your own homemade lip balm and note how easy it is to get a lip balm that is all natural.

1. Yummy Chocolate Coconut Lip Balm

You can find many recipes for homemade lip balm but what could possibly be better than coconut and chocolate? This recipe combines these two wonderful flavors in an easy to make and delicious tasting lip balm that is completely natural and good for your lips. You will need:

• 1/3 cup of cocoa powder or 4 or 5 chocolate chips
• 1 teaspoon coconut oil
• 1 teaspoon almond oil
• 3 drops Vitamin E oil – you can get this by cutting the tip off a Vitamin E capsule

Simply mix the ingredients together in a small pan or glass bowl that is safe for heating. Create a double broiler using a smaller pan with water. Boil the water and place the bowl or pan over the pan with boiling water. Mix until all the ingredients are melted and mixed together well and pour into containers to cool. You can mix this up and store it for about eight weeks at a time and you can combine other flavors if you like such as vanilla with chocolate, orange or even peppermint.

2. Honey Lip Balm

This recipe calls for essential oils and you can use your favorites to create any flavor that you want. The base of the lip balm is beeswax and this is an excellent protective ingredient for those cold, windy days or hot sunny days in summer. You will need:

• 3 teaspoons of beeswax – choose the unbleached type for better results
• 5 teaspoons of either castor, sunflower or jojoba oil – these are carrier oils
• A few drops of essential oils – normally it takes around 6 drops for optimal flavoring
• 1 teaspoon of honey

You will need to melt the beeswax along with the carrier oil of your choice using a double broiler. Stir well to ensure that all ingredients are mixed well and then remove the mixture from heat. Stir in the essential oils and honey and mix completely. You can add a bit of lipstick in your favorite shade if you want color and then divide into containers.

3. Peppermint Lip Balm

Peppermint is a great flavor for lip balm and the cooling properties are excellent for healing chapped or dry lips. To make this peppermint lip balm you will need:

• 1 ounce of beeswax
• 5 or more drops of peppermint essential oil
• 4 tablespoons of shea butter
• 2 tablespoons of coconut oil

Again, just melt the beeswax in a double broiler setup and once thoroughly melted, just add the oils and shea butter. You can distribute this into smaller lip balm containers or buy the tubes at a craft store and make your own tubes of Chapstick type lip balm. Make sure that you allow the lip balm to cool completely so that it hardens properly before using it.

4. Homemade Burt’s Bees Lip Balm

Burt’s Bees is one of the most popular brands for lip balms and other lotions. This recipe allows you to create your own version of this popular brand and for far less money than you would typically pay for a name brand. You can make the entire recipe for less than what a tube of name brand lip balm costs. For this one you will need:

• 5 or more drops of essential oils – use any flavor that you like
• 2 tablespoons of carrier oils such as olive oil, castor oil or others
• 1 tablespoon of cocoa butter
• 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon of beeswax
• 1 tablespoon of honey

Using a double boiler set up again, melt the beeswax along with the carrier oils and cocoa butter. You can also use the microwave for this if you do not have a double boiler but be sure that you do not leave it in the microwave for too long. Once the beeswax has melted, simply add the essential oil flavor of your choosing and mix well.

5. Easy 3 Ingredient Lip Balm

This one is the easiest of all and takes only 3 ingredients, all of which can be found at your local natural food store. For this easy recipe you will need:

• 2 teaspoons of grated beeswax
• 6 drops of essential oil – again use any flavor that you like
• 2 ¼ teaspoons of jojoba oil

Melt the beeswax along with the jojoba oil in a double broiler or in the microwave and once thoroughly mixed, add the essential oils. Pour this into the containers of your choosing and then wait about 15 minutes or so for it to cool before using.
You certainly do not have to purchase premade lip balms. These recipes give you a good start on making your own and from ingredients that should be readily available wherever you live. Use the recipes above or come up with one of your own by using key ingredients and mixing and matching flavors. You will get a natural lip balm that will leave your lips soft and healthy and one that costs much less than brand names.
