Is 101 Dalmatians the musical good? ›

So this family musical, adapted by Zinnie Harris, has form to live up to. It comes with lots of puppyish enthusiasm and Toby Olié's adorable puppets, but it does not quite manage to melt our hearts in the way of its forebears.

She has the dog, who has recently given birth, treated by a vet and names her Perdita (meaning "lost"). Perdita helps to nurse the pups and becomes a member of the family. She tells Pongo about her lost love Prince and the resulting litter of puppies, which were sold by her neglectful owner.

Because that's what the original novel by Dodie Smith was called. The Dalmatians consist of 97 puppies that Cruella de Vil kidnapped to make her Dalmatian coat, Pongo and Missus, the parents of a litter of 15 puppies and Perdita an old liver spotted Dalmatian hired as a wet nurse for Pongo and Missus puppies.

1. 101 Dalmatians. The original and still the best, 1961's 101 Dalmatians remains the high point of the franchise to date.

However, One Hundred and One Dalmatians contains references to animal cruelty, slapstick violence, and one of Disney's scariest and most iconic villains. It's therefore not suitable for children under 4 years and we recommend parental guidance for children aged 4-5 and/or a sensitive audience.

In addition to having humans playing the primarily canine characters, 15 actual Dalmatian dogs are featured in the production, trained and handled by Joel Slaven. The dogs are a mix of show dogs and ones adopted from various rescue groups around the country.
